Program Description

Interarts is a unique interdisciplinary Bachelor of Fine Arts program that provides you with the opportunity to take one major and one minor concentration from our programs in music, theatre performance, and theatre production. We are currently developing a minor stream in motion picture arts.

Throughout history, artists have not only responded to events and experiences of their times, they have also been influenced by the works of artists in other fields. Creative insights expressed in one mode have frequently been interpreted in others: a painter is inspired by a musical composition, a sculptor depicts the dramatic pose of a great actor, a Biblical event is interpreted in music, painting, and drama.

Similarly, important movements have arisen throughout history in which artists have attempted to create a 'total art work.' Our interdisciplinary approach focuses on the history and theory of artistic movements as well as the analysis of individual works. The practice of art from this perspective facilitates creative activity from symposia to collaborative multi-media projects.

An interdisciplinary approach to the theory of art is interested in the interaction of aural, visual, and kinetic code systems in a variety of works, including collages, installations, music theatre, and film. What effect do the signs from one code system have on the others? Is there a natural hierarchy among systems and how is coherence achieved in such an event? These and similar questions inform critiques of historical works and contemporary projects alike. Such questions and experiments are part of our program.

Our Learning Environment

A significant part of the design of Interarts is the opportunity for you to interact with people from a variety of different arts. This is achieved by you and your classmates taking the core Interarts courses (Interarts I, II, III). You also have a variety of opportunities to collaborate in creative projects such as theatrical and musical productions, visual art displays, and special events.

Enrollment

Since enrollment in any year of the program will be limited, admission to the program may require any combination of interview, audition, or portfolio presentation with the appropriate departments. Further information on entrance requirements to Laurentian University can be found on the Admissions Page.

Transfers from Upper Years and Other Institutions

Students from other programs will be granted full status in the BFA once deficiencies in courses and grades are fulfilled. Consideration for admission will be made on an individual basis. In general, there is no transfer of credits for the first yer of college unless the courses are BFA specific courses; thereafter up to 30 credits may be allowed if adequate standing is achieved.

Credit Transfers Between Institutions

In general, credits for courses will be granted according to the Laurentian University system: three (3) credits for three hours of instruction per week (minimum) for 12 weeks, six (6) credits for three hours of instruction per week (minimum) for the full academic year.

Enrollment Options

Each student entering the program will be required to select a program of specialization or non-specialization.
Specialization: students may select either Music or Theatre Performance
Non-specialization: students may select from Theatre Production or Motion Picture Arts Production. Students successfully completing one of these options may obtain a certificate.

Minimum Standing

To remain in the program, students must maintain at least a 70% average in their specialization or, in the case of those without a specialization, a minimum of 70% in BFA courses.
