Thorneloe University is pleased to announce its upcoming production of George F. Walker’s classic Canadian family drama, Escape From Happiness.
First produced in 1991, the play tells the story of a troubled and deeply eccentric family, shattered by family violence and poverty, just trying to get by in a dangerous and sometimes crazy land of police and thieves.
Director Bill Lane has a long history with George F. Walker’s work, beginning with his now legendary première production of Zastrozzi in 1977. And he’s excited about this production of a classic Walker play. “I’ve never directed this one, but I’ve seen several great productions over the years,” says Bill Lane. “It’s a great big beautiful play, and this production is shaping up to be something really special.”
The Thorneloe University production stars Theatre and Motion Picture Arts Department Chair Patricia Tedford as the indomitable mother who is holding her troubled family together, and veteran Sudbury actor Ron Tough as the haunted figure who claims to be her husband. The large cast of ten features some of the brightest lights in the Thorneloe Theatre and Motion Picture Arts Department.
The production is mounted with the design and technical support of the Technical Theatre Program at Cambrian College, with assistance from former students of the program.
The production opens at the Ernie Checkeris Theatre at Thorneloe University (935 Ramsey Lake Rd.) on Thursday, November 16, with a special $5 Preview on Wednesday, November 15 (tickets purchased at the door). It runs through Saturday evening, November 18. All evening performances begin at 7:30 PM. For tickets and further information, check the Thorneloe University website at www.thorneloe.ca/theatre.
