Ancient Studies is a multidisciplinary program designed for students with a broad interest in the ancient world, with a focus on the ancient Mediterranean world, from the earliest times to the age of the emperor Justinian in the mid-sixth century CE. Topics include political and social history, economic systems, international relations, religion, literature, art and archaeology, etc. Because it is a multidisciplinary program, students will be introduced to a range of sources, approaches, and theories used in the different contributing departments and disciplines. This program is for anyone who is interested in the roots of Western and other modern civilizations.

Important notices

This program is not appropriate for students who plan on doing graduate studies in Classics. Please consult the Classical Studies pages.

Majors in Ancient Studies and Classical Studies cannot be combined.

It is recommended that first-year students take ANTR 1006/7 and CLAS 1006/7 as they are prerequisites for many upper-year courses.

Students may count a maximum of 42 cr at the 1000 level towards their degree.
