John St-Helier Gibaut was born in Montreal and raised in Toronto. His undergraduate degree is from the University of Toronto (1980), and his Master of Divinity(1984) and Doctor of Theology (1994) degrees were conferred by Trinity College and the University of Toronto. He was a tutor in liturgy and homitics at Trinity’s Faculty of Divinity, where he was later appointed as an adjunct professor. He taught Liturgy, Church History, and Anglican Studies in the Faculty of Theology at Saint Paul University, Ottawa, where he also held a number of academic administrative positions (1994-2007).  He is a former staff member of the World Council of Churches, Geneva, Switzerland, where he served as the Director of the Commission on Faith and Order (2008-2015). He later served as the Director for Unity, Faith and Order at the Anglican Communion Office, London, UK (2015-2019).  He began a five-year term as president of Thorneloe University in 2019, which will end in May 2024.  As well, he is also the Director of Thornenloe’s School of Theology.

John’s cluster of theological interests revolve around Liturgy (liturgical history, theology, and pastoral application; ordination rites; preaching), History of Christianity (late antiquity, medieval, and Reformation), and Ecumenism (history of ecumenism, ecumenism and liturgy, ordained ministries, and ecclesiology). His articles in these areas have been published in both North America, Europe, and the United Kingdom. His doctoral dissertation, The Cursus Honorum: A Study of the Origins and Evolution of Sequential Ordination, was published by Peter Lang Press in 2000.
