Thorneloe Memorial Bursaries

Deadline: November 25 at 4:00 PM  

Several bursaries in memory of Thorneloe students (Elizabeth Pentland, Brian Clark, Louis Larocque, Colin Elliot), as well as bursaries established by the Faculty and Governors, are awarded to students who are living in residence at Thorneloe University. Four bursaries of $250 are available this year. Awards are made on the basis of good academic standing and financial need. Application through Thorneloe University is required, and the awards are made upon recommendation of the Provost of Thorneloe University once per term. The Ted Evans Memorial Bursary

Deadline: November 25 at 4:00 PM 

Donated by the Evans family and friends in memory of Mr. Ted Evans, an active Sudbury community minded businessman.  This bursary is awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate or a graduate student on the basis of good academic standing and financial need, who is a permanent resident of Northern Ontario. One bursary of $300 is available this year. Applicants must show indication of active community work either during their high-school education (if in their first year) or during their studies at Laurentian University with a 200 word statement. Special consideration will be given to students studying in a programme of business such as Commerce, Economics, or Business Administration.  It will be an asset to have taken courses at Thorneloe University or to be living in Thorneloe Residence.  Mr. Evans was a member of the Board of Governors of Thorneloe University for many years.  Application through Thorneloe University is required, and the awards are made upon recommendation of the Provost of Thorneloe College. The Marian Charlotte Higgins Scholarship

Deadline: November 25 at 4:00 PM 

This scholarship is awarded annually by Thorneloe University to a female student who is living at the Thorneloe Residence and is registered at Laurentian University, and has taken a minimum of 18 credits.  This scholarship of $1200 is awarded to one recipient on the basis both of academic achievement and need.  Students must be continuing in their Laurentian programme of studies to receive this scholarship. Application is required. Donald K. Brown Memorial Bursary

Deadline: November 25 at 4:00 PM  

A Sudburian for nearly fifty years, Donald K. Brown was a prominent businessman and highly respected member of the community. This bursary, donated by family and friends, is awarded annually to an academically qualified full-time undergraduate or graduate student who is a permanent resident of Northern Ontario (under the policy on residency of the Ontario Student Assistance Program) on the basis of financial need. Application through Thorneloe University is required, and the awards are made upon recommendation of the Provost of Thorneloe University.

R.H. and Eva P. Murray Residence Scholarship

Deadline: November 25 at 4:00 PM  

Four scholarships of $1500 each will be awarded to residents of Thorneloe University, who have achieved an overall first class standing in any Laurentian degree program in courses taken in the year preceding the award, who have made a positive contribution to the life of the residence during this academic year (as described in an essay of 250 words at the time of application), and who are returning to residence for the next session of study at Laurentian University. Application is required. Hillary Afelskie Memorial Bursary

Deadline: March 10th at 4:00 PM

This bursary was set up in memory of Hillary Afelskie, a Thorneloe University resident who was tragically killed in a traffic accident on January 4, 2012. One bursary valued at $250 is awarded annually to a female resident at Thorneloe with a demonstrated financial need, good academic standing, and record of volunteer involvement in community, non-profit, or charitable activities. An application letter is required that articulates these qualifications.
